Kaitrin Beechey is a Canadian artist who says her Asperger’s is a positive influence on her art. From an early age, she was captivated by intricate detail, pattern and repetition. These traits dominate her whimsical depictions of hidden fantasy worlds.
“I see my Asperger’s as a gift. Just like my curly hair, it is a part of me. It shapes my personality and the way I view the world.
My drawings are very detailed. I use a combination of black pen and pencil and I fill the entire space. I like the dramatic effect of the black and white patterns.
My inspirations come from various sources--hiking in the woods, reading favourite books like ‘Harry Potter’, watching movies like ‘Lord of the Rings’, listening to music like ‘Enya,’ and of course, my vivid imagination.
I call my art ‘Windows by Kaitrin’ because windows go both ways. They allow me to look out to the world, but they also allow you a glimpse into my peaceful world.”
Kaitrin’s art has been displayed at many conferences and workshops across Canada and in the United States. Through her art and her speaking engagements she encourages others to cherish their differences and to celebrate their strengths.
